Are you working on interesting stuff?
Aditya November 19th
The other day I met with Senior Director of my company in an elevator. We have hardly communicated before, so when he entered into an elevator, after greeting him, I didn’t understand what to talk with him. But he took the initiative and asked me -
"Are you working on interesting stuff?"
I loved his question.
Generally when we meet someone, we ask, "What are you working on?" or "How’s your work coming along?" or "What do you do?"
These are mundane questions. The questions themselves are not exciting enough to ask. And we can hardly expect other person to respond with an exciting answer. Those conversations are just for the namesake.
But the question – "Are you working on interesting stuff?" itself has a positivity and passion. While answering this question, I found myself passionate and excited enough to say that, "Yes, I’m working on so and so great stuff".
This is how we initiate the conversation in an exciting way and make sure that we also end up in an exciting way.
In a two-minutes meeting, as a leader, my director impressed me a lot. He surely taught me how to stimulate passion in just two minutes amongst your subordinates by asking a simple question in a different way.
Have an exciting week ahead!
